What Does a School Counselor Do?
School counselors are school professionals who specialize in helping students through situations that may arise during their educational careers. They provide an extra support system outside of students’ classrooms. Students may utilize the school counselor for a variety of issues that may be affecting their academic performance: bullying, grief, parental separation or divorce, anxieties, fears, etc.
School counselors don’t just reach out to all students individually, but also as groups. School counselors visit students’ classrooms and meet with them in small groups.
You will find your school counselor working with teachers, administration, and parents. They can be a great resource of information concerning developmental issues of school-age children.
